Japan Resumes E-Visa Services for UAE Residents Through VFS Global starting August 1, 2024, . The Consulate General of Japan in Dubai confirmed this update, noting that it will no longer accept visa applications directly, except for diplomatic and official visas. This shift means all visa-related inquiries and applications must now go through VFS Global, as indicated on their website, which lists all requirements, documentation, booking details, opening hours, and processing times.
This news is particularly welcome for UAE expats who have found the visa process cumbersome since the suspension of the e-visa service on April 27, 2024. During the suspension, travelers had to email the consulate for an appointment, making it challenging to secure slots. However Emiratis continued to enjoy visa-free access to Japan.

The reinstated e-visa service, available only to residents in Dubai, provides a streamlined process that can be completed entirely online, from application submission to payment. Residents of Abu Dhabi must still apply through the Japanese embassy. The standard processing time for the e-visa is eight working days, provided that all required documents are submitted correctly.
The e-visa allows a short-term stay of up to 90 days and is valid for three months from the date of issuance. This convenient option is available to residents from various countries, including Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States, who are looking to visit Japan for tourism.
