Dubai Roads and Transport Authority is making significant strides in modernizing the emirate’s traffic management with the launch of Phase II of its Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Improvement and Expansion Project. This ambitious phase aims to increase the coverage of Dubai’s main road network from the current 60% to a full 100% by 2026, extending the ITS coverage from 480 km to 710 km.
Enhancing Traffic Connectivity and Surveillance
The initial phase of the ITS project saw the installation of 116 new traffic surveillance cameras, bringing the total number to 311. Additionally, 100 incident monitoring and vehicle counting devices were added, increasing the total to 227. These enhancements have significantly boosted the ability to monitor and manage traffic incidents efficiently.

Moreover, the first phase included
- The deployment of 112 Variable Message Signs (VMS) that provide real-time updates on road conditions
- 115 devices to measure travel time and speed
- 17 weather sensor stations.
To support these technologies, RTA constructed 660 km of electric power lines and an extensive fibre optic network spanning 820 km.
Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems with AI Technologies
The heart of Dubai’s traffic management lies in the Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Center at Al Barsha. Recognized as one of the most advanced traffic control centres globally, the Dubai ITS Center integrates cutting-edge technologies and systems to manage the city’s growing transportation network. The centre employs artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things (IoT), and sophisticated communication systems to gather and analyze critical traffic data.
The centre’s advanced traffic control system, known as “iTraffic,” leverages AI and big data analytics to enhance decision-making processes. This integrated approach ensures that Dubai remains at the forefront of intelligent traffic management, alongside cities like Singapore and Seoul.
Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems CITS
As part of the ongoing ITS Improvement and Expansion Project, RTA is committed to adopting the latest intelligent technologies and software. This includes Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (CITS) and other advanced ITS technologies. RTA plans to benchmark its progress against leading global cities to continually improve its traffic management capabilities.
“The project has improved incident monitoring by 63% and reduced response times by 20% through the use of Variable Message Signs (VMS). These advancements were achieved through enhanced integration with the Enterprise Command and Control Centre and the Dubai Police General HQ,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA.
Al Tayer emphasized that the expansion would enhance road network management and traffic flow by improving monitoring capabilities, speeding up response times to incidents, and providing real-time information to the public. New VMS and smart applications will help distribute traffic more effectively, improving personal mobility through the integration of modern technologies and self-driving transport solutions. This comprehensive ITS infrastructure is designed to meet both current and future needs, ensuring Dubai remains a leader in smart transportation.
Conclusion
Dubai’s commitment to expanding and enhancing its Intelligent Traffic Systems underscores the city’s dedication to creating a seamless, efficient, and smart transportation network. As the emirate continues to adopt cutting-edge technologies, residents and visitors can look forward to safer, faster, and more reliable travel experiences throughout the city.
