Plastic Bottle Recycling Program Initiative
Abu Dhabi’s transport authority, AD Mobility, has introduced a plastic bottle recycling program where you can earn free bus fare by recycling. Launched in 2022, this eco-friendly initiative is in partnership with the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and Cycled Technologies, a company specializing in smart recycling solutions. Recently, they have added two new recycling machines in Al Ain and Al Dhafra, making it easier for more people to join in.

How Does Plastic Bottle Recycling Program Work?
To earn free bus rides, you need to collect points by recycling plastic bottles using the ‘Cycled Rewards’ app. Here’s how points are earned:
- Small Bottle (600 ml or less): 1 point
- Large Bottle (more than 600 ml): 2 points
Each point is worth 10 fils. So, if you collect 10 points, you get AED 1.
How to Get Started with the ‘Cycled Rewards’ App:
- Download the App: Get the ‘Cycled Rewards’ app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Sign Up: Register with your mobile number and name. You’ll receive a One-Time Password (OTP) to verify your account.
- Scan and Recycle: At the recycling station, scan the QR code on the screen using the app.
- Deposit Bottles: Drop your plastic bottles into the slot.
- Earn Points: The app will show the points you’ve earned.
How to Transfer Points to Your Hafilat Bus Card:
To use the points for bus fares, you need a personalized Hafilat card linked to your Emirates ID. This card is available at Abu Dhabi bus stations or online at www.hafilat.darb.ae. The card costs AED 10.
- Once you have enough points, follow these steps:
- Open the ‘Cycled Rewards’ app and click on ‘Redeem Now’.
- Choose ‘Direct Spend’ and select ‘Integrated Transport Centre’.
- Enter an amount between AED 10 and AED 100, based on the points you’ve earned.
- Enter your Hafilat card number.
- Tap ‘Redeem’. You will get a confirmation once the points are transferred to your card.
